Environmental activist Greta Thunberg has been reimagined as a puppet by British TV show Spitting Image – sparking a fierce backlash online.

Greta will be portrayed as a weather girl that delivers warnings about the heat.

However, critics thought it was unfair to poke fun at the 17-year-old climate activist, who has autism.

The show's broadcaster, ITV, has since been forced to defend the puppet.

‘It’s a very straightforward joke and is nothing to do with her as an individual,’ ITV spokesperson Reemah Sakaan told the Broadcasting Press Guild.

Greta Thunberg does not appear to be fazed by her Spitting Image caricature — liking a picture of it on social media.
