The Collision That Shook Maritime Safety
On July 25, 1956, the Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish liner Stockholm off Nantucket, killing 51 people. Miscommunication and radar misinterpretation caused Stockholm’s icebreaker bow to tear a massive hole in Andrea Doria’s starboard side, leading to rapid flooding and an irreversible list.
Despite compromised lifeboats, a massive rescue effort led by Ile de France saved nearly all passengers. The ship sank the next morning and remains a dangerous dive site due to strong currents and poor visibility. The disaster remains a key maritime case study on navigational safety.
