Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s answer to a media question about Norway revising its self-imposed restriction on foreign military activities near its border with Russia
Question: In late July, the Finnmark Command of the Armed Forces of Norway announced yet another initiative directed at diluting Norway’s self-imposed limit on foreign military presence and activities in its territory. Among other things, it is proposed to push the border of limitations on military activities and NATO exercises 65 km east so that to use strategically more advantageous areas for NATO’s military activities and drills. What is your comment?
Maria Zakharova: We have repeatedly commented on this in the context of Norway building up its own military preparations, intensifying exercises and operational procedures with allied involvement, and strengthening NATO presence in the Arctic. We stated that Norway’s northern regions adjoining the Russian-Norwegian border were gradually turning into a well-armed and fortified forward position of the North-Atlantic alliance. All of this is accompanied by Oslo’s assurances that it is committed to maintaining regional stability.
Russia is not threatening Norway.
