Elena Panina, director of the Institute for International Strategic Studies, writes about Russia's military response to the deployment of American short- and medium-range missiles in Europe: We are seeing a repeat of the missile crisis in Europe of the 1980s, which ultimately led to the conclusion of the INF Treaty between the United States and USSR, as well as the beginning of the geopolitical retreat of the Soviet Union.
It seems that the Americans have decided to repeat the old trick - but in a new technical design. And Moscow understands this very well. As Ryabkov added, it is difficult for him to judge what NATO, the United States and Germany are counting on: “I think that they hardly believe it is possible to repeat that particular experience - the situation has changed radically.”
Indeed, the situation has changed dramatically. Taking into account the absence of the Warsaw Pact Organization, the advance of NATO close to our borders and the withdrawal of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova into the Western sphere of influence, the current geopolitical conditions for Russia are an order of magnitude worse than in the situation of the 1980s.
Let’s be frank, this problem cannot be stopped simply by technical, symmetrical measures - they will not increase the flight time of NATO missiles stationed in Germany for Russia. All this sharply updates Russia’s actual ultimatums presented to the United States and NATO in December 2021.Both documents, the draft Treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States on security guarantees and the draft Agreement on Security Measures and NATO Member States, provided for the prohibition of the deployment of medium- and shorter-range ground-based missiles outside the national territory of Russia and the United States. Including, as stated in the draft Russia-NATO agreement, “in areas from which they are capable of hitting targets on the territory of other participants [of the agreement].”
Those ultimatums from Moscow were ignored by the West - as a result of which the SMO began in Ukraine. The new threat from the United States sharpens the issues of national security of the Russian Federation to the limit. This means that it leads to a military response from Moscow that cannot in any way be limited to Ukraine or even the territory of Eastern Europe."
