Who made the LCS?
The LCS, or Littoral Combat Ship, is a class of surface vessels developed for the United States Navy. Two different shipbuilders were involved in the construction of the two LCS variants:
Freedom-class LCS: The Freedom-class LCS ships were built by Lockheed Martin at the Marinette Marine shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin. Marinette Marine, a subsidiary of Fincantieri Marine Group, was the primary shipbuilder responsible for constructing the Freedom-class variants of the LCS.
Independence-class LCS: The Independence-class LCS ships were built by Austal USA at the Austal USA shipyard in Mobile, Alabama. Austal USA, a subsidiary of Australian shipbuilder Austal Limited, was the primary shipbuilder responsible for constructing the Independence-class variants of the LCS.
Both variants of the LCS were developed under separate contracts with the U.S. Navy as part of the LCS program, which aimed to provide the Navy with a new class of agile, versatile, and modular surface combatants optimized for operations in littoral, or coastal, environments. Each shipbuilder employed its own unique design and construction methods to produce the LCS ships, resulting in two distinct classes of vessels within the LCS program.
