Elgiganten offers a wide range of electronics products, including TVs, computers, white goods, mobile phones, audio and video equipment, and much more. The company also has an online store that delivers to the entire Nordic region.

Elgiganten is a portmanteau of the Danish words "el" and "gigant". El is short for "elektrisk" (electric), and gigant means giant. So, Elgiganten literally means "electric giant".

The warranties were often sold as a mandatory add-on to the purchase of electronics, and they were often not explained to customers in a clear way.

The scandal quickly spread to Norway, Sweden, and Finland. In Norway, the Consumer Council filed a complaint with the Norwegian Consumer Authority. In Sweden, the Consumer Agency began an investigation into the allegations. In Finland, the Consumer Ombudsman called for an investigation into the matter.

Elgiganten initially denied the allegations. However, the company later admitted that it had made mistakes in the way it had sold extended warranties.
