Den femte februari 1994 skriver dåvarande statsminister Carl Bildt ett mejl till USA:s president Bill Clinton (och får också ett svar).

Mailet är det första i världen som skickas mellan två regeringschefer. Båda sidor släpper också pressmeddelanden om den historiska tilldragelsen och händelsen får mycket uppmärksamhet både i svensk och internationell press.

Så här skriver Carl Bildt till Clinton:

Dear Bill,

Apart from testing this connection on the global Internet system, I want to congratulate you on your decision to end the trade embargo on Vietnam. I am planning to go to Vietnam in April and will certainly use the occasion to take up the question of the MIA’s. From the Swedish side we have tried to be helpful on this issue in the past, and we will continue to use the contacts we might have.

Sweden is—as you know—one of the leading countries in the world in the field of telecommunications, and it is only appropriate that we should be among the first to use the Internet also for political contacts and communications around the globe.

Var det verkligen Clinton som svarade?

Enligt Skip Rutherford, som är chef på Clinton Presidential Foundation som bland annat har hand om närmare 40 miljoner e-postbrev från Clintonstaben, skickade Clinton dock under sina åtta år som president bara två mejl själv. Det ena var ett tomt testmejl och det andra gick till en astronaut ute i rymden. Så eventuellt är det någon i hans personal som skriver själva mejlsvaret till Carl Bildt.
