RT Statskontrollerad media från Ryssland · 4 tim · A former Italian cardinal and nine other people will face a Vatican trial this week over alleged financial crimes involving a donation to the cardinal’s brother and a failed property investment in London. Angelo Becciu, 73, who once held one of the most senior papal positions under Pope Francis before being dismissed last year, has been charged with crimes that include embezzlement and abuse of office, which could bring a fine or time in prison. Becciu has already been stripped of his cardinal rank. It is the first time a cardinal has been indicted by Vatican criminal prosecutors. The charges arise from a two-year investigation into how the Secretariat of State – the key department in the Vatican’s central administration – managed its vast asset portfolio. In particular, they focus on a disastrous €350 million ($413 million) investment in a 17,000-square meter building in London, which was bought at a vastly inflated price using resources intended for the Holy Father’s personal charitable work, leading to ‘substantial losses for the Vatican,’ according to the Holy See. Others accused include the former heads of the Vatican’s financial intelligence unit and two London-based Italian businessmen involved in the purchase.
