RT Statskontrollerad media från Ryssland · 14 tim · Tunisian President Kais Saied has dismissed the country’s government, frozen parliament and threatened military violence against his opponents. Citing unrest over the ‘dysfunctional’ political system and crumbling healthcare, Saied announced on Sunday that he had sacked Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, promising to ‘save’ the country with the help of a new PM. His move has been described as a ‘coup’ by some, but hundreds of people who had rallied against the government earlier in the day celebrated the news. Parliament speaker and leader of the ‘moderate’ Islamist Ennahda party, Rached Ghannouchi, denounced Saied’s move as ‘a coup against the revolution and constitution’, and called for street protests. Saied, however, said: ‘I warn any who think of resorting to weapons... and whoever shoots a bullet, the armed forces will respond with bullets.’ Tunisia adopted a new constitution in 2014 but still has no court to settle constitutional disputes. It also consistently fails to form stable governments. Saied and the parliament were both elected by popular vote in 2019, with Ghannouchi’s Ennahda becoming the dominant force in the house, leading to a political rivalry that has caused the ‘dysfunctional’ claims among anti-government protesters.
