Cuba’s president has claimed the US is behind the wave of recent protests that have gripped the island nation.
Amid ongoing food shortages and power outages, thousands of people took to the streets of the capital Havana on Sunday.
But Miguel Díaz-Canel – who succeeded Raúl Castro as the country’s First Secretary of the Communist Party, and the de facto leader of Cuba, earlier this year – blamed the shortages on the US trade embargo, which is currently the longest-standing such sanction in history.
In a televized address, he said Washington had pursued ‘a policy of economic suffocation to provoke social unrest in the country,’ and added that the unrest was provoked by a clear and thoroughly planned campaign.
President Biden has already thrown his weight behind the protestors, stating that the Cuban government must ‘serve their [the people’s] needs at this vital moment rather than enriching themselves.’
