RT Statskontrollerad media från Ryssland · 16 tim · The Taliban has launched a wave of offensives in northern Afghanistan, gaining territory and capturing a key border crossing with Tajikistan. The United Nations' envoy for Afghanistan said Taliban forces had taken more than 50 of 370 districts and could soon control provincial capitals. Fierce fighting between insurgents and Afghan government forces has taken place on the outskirts of three capitals, in the Faryab, Balkh, and Kunduz provinces. The Taliban also captured Afghanistan’s main border crossing with Tajikistan. Shir Khan Bandar, about 50km from Kunduz city, is its most significant gain. An army officer told the AFP news agency, ‘We were forced to leave all check posts … and some of our soldiers crossed the border into Tajikistan. By the morning, they (Taliban fighters) were everywhere, hundreds of them.’ Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the gain. ‘Our Mujahideen are in full control of Shir Khan Bandar and all the border crossings with Tajikistan in Kunduz,’ he told AFP. Despite attempts at peace talks, violence in the country has escalated since the US announced its plan to unconditionally withdraw all troops by September 11.
