PayPal co-founder and venture capitalist Peter Thiel believes bitcoin is being used by China as a financial weapon aimed at undermining the monetary policy of the United States.
Thiel, who himself is a major investor in cryptocurrency, believes that the US should tighten regulations on crypto.
‘Even though I’m a pro-crypto, pro-bitcoin maximalist person, I do wonder whether if, at this point, bitcoin should also be thought of in part as a Chinese financial weapon against the US, where it threatens fiat money, but it especially threatens the US dollar,’ the billionaire said at a virtual event hosted by the Richard Nixon Foundation.
Thiel also believes that China attempted to use the euro in a similar way by denominating oil trades conducted in the currency to undermine the global standing of the dollar.
